Ten Ways to Keep Your Brain from Screaming “OUCH!” is the second in the Transformation Trilogy, a series of three books that collectively argue for radical changes in how mental disorders are assessed and treated. It is written for teens and adults who want to protect their brains. The book can be summed up in the chapter titles, each of which begins with a cartoon brain performing a particular function. These are Clean it, Feed it—or not, Rest It, Inspire It, Defend it, Tune it, Debug it—or not, Balance it, Sculpt it and Energize it. The book has a section on how to protect baby’s brain and information on lab resources and drug interactions. Readers are encouraged to expand upon the ideas by searching on underlined keywords to access the latest information on a variety of interventions. This book is like a CliffsNotes version of Moyer’s last book in the Transformation Trilogy, Beyond Mental Illness. It will be published in March 2014.

Beyond Mental Illness describes a bold new vision, a biologically based method of assessment and treatment of those called the “mentally” ill. This approach targets precise biomarkers and risk factors. Rather than assessing behavior-based labels, new individualized diagnoses are needed based on the biology of the brain. Part I, “How We Got Here” begins with an historical overview of the evolution of diagnoses. Moyer then traces current threats to brain health and factors that have prevented the evolution of more useful diagnostic systems. Personalized health care is presented as a solution to the prevailing symptoms-based model. The second part, “Where We Are Going,” illustrates for the reader empirically-based, measurable and treatable biomedical disorders, the likes of which could form the basis of a dynamic and effective diagnostic system. This book will be published in March 2014.
